Ajātaśatru (English spelling)

Ajātaśatru (English spelling)
King of Magadha in central India at the time of the rise of Buddhism (reigned from about 491 BC to about 459 BC, although there are other theories). Also written as King Ajatashatru. His father was King Bimbisara and his mother Vaidehi. According to legend, his father had no children, so he consulted a fortune teller, who answered that a sage would be reborn as the king's son after his death. Impatient, the king sought out the sage and killed him. Thus was born Ajatashatru. As the son grew older, he was persuaded by Devadatta, who had rebelled against the Buddha, to imprison his father, starve him to death, and ascend to the throne. During his reign, he annexed the surrounding enemy countries and made Magadha into a great power, but he regretted his actions against his father and eventually became a follower of Buddhism. After the Buddha's death, he provided all the materials necessary for Mahakasyapa to collect the first Buddhist scriptures at the Ten Caves, and also gave various forms of protection to Jainism.
