Jinja (English spelling)
A city in southeastern Uganda. It is located on the north shore of Lake Victoria and on the right bank of the outlet of the Victoria Nile. It is at an altitude of 1,200m, so the maximum temperature is 26°C, making it quite bearable. It is the country's main industrial city, and is home to copper smelting, steel, cotton textiles, plywood, tobacco, and flour milling industries, utilizing the power generated by Owen Falls. It is also a lake port and has long been the center of trade along the Lake Victoria coast, distributing cotton, corn, peanuts, and sugar cane. It is also known as a resort town. It is connected by rail and road to cities on the Indian Ocean coast, such as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. There is a monument to J. Speke, a British explorer who arrived in 1862 in search of the source of the Nile. Population 60,979 (1991 estimate).
