Shingen bag

Japanese:
Shingen bag

A bag for carrying miscellaneous items. There is a theory that this name was given because it resembles the bag behind the portrait of Takeda Shingen, but this is unclear. The bag is made by surrounding the periphery of a square or rectangular bottom board with rags of fabric and tying a thick braided cord around the opening. It was made in 1891 (Meiji 24) with patterned weaving and was originally used as a more convenient way to carry miscellaneous items than a furoshiki (wrapping cloth), but in 1897 it became popular as a more convenient way to match Japanese clothing than a leather handbag. Since this bag can hold everything, it was also called a gasai bag. When it was made smaller and had a woven basket attached to the bottom, it was called a Kago Shingen. However, it later fell into decline due to the rise of baskets, trunks, and suitcases.
