Born as the fourth son of Gion Kastriot, a nobleman of northern Albania, around 1430, his father accepted the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, and in accordance with the custom of the time, he was sent as a hostage to the Ottoman court along with his brothers. There, he converted to Islam and served as a chamberlain. Due to his courage and prowess, he was given the name Skander after Alexander the Great, and served as a military commander (beg). …
