A former town in Naka District, southeastern Tokushima Prefecture. It occupies the middle reaches of the Naka River. The main settlement is on the terrace on the right bank of the Naka River. It was a small castle town in the Middle Ages, and developed as a valley settlement in Niudani, upstream of the Naka River. The town produces cedar and cypress timber, and also cultivates mandarin oranges, sudani citrus, and strawberries. There is an abundance of limestone, and lime is manufactured here. The Washiki Line is a scenic spot on the Naka River. In March 2005, it merged with Aioi Town, Kaminaka Town, Kizawa Village, and Kitou Village in Naka District to become a town, Naka Town. 29.79 km2 . 3,438 people (2003). 徳島県南東部,那賀郡の旧町。那賀川の中流域を占める。主集落は那賀川の右岸段丘上にあり,中世の小城下町で,那賀川上流域の仁宇谷(にうだに)の渓口集落として発達。スギ,ヒノキ材を産し,ミカン,スダチ,イチゴの栽培も営む。石灰岩が多く,石灰の製造を行う。鷲敷ラインは那賀川の景勝地。2005年3月那賀郡相生町,上那賀町,木沢村,木頭村と合併し町制,那賀町となる。29.79km2。3438人(2003)。
