Andromaque - Andromack (English spelling)

Andromaque - Andromack (English spelling)

A tragedy in verse by French dramatist Racine. Five acts. First performed in 1667. Based on Greek mythology, the play is set in the palace of King Pirith of Epirus, where Andromache, widow of Trojan hero Hector, and her surviving child are held prisoner several years after the fall of Troy. Pirith is engaged to Princess Hermione of Sparta, but is in love with Andromache. Prince Orestes, a Greek envoy seeking the life of his surviving child, is also in love with Hermione. To be faithful to her late husband and to ensure the safety of her surviving child, Andromache accepts King Pirith's proposal, prepared to die, but Hermione, driven mad by jealousy, has Orestes kill the king and commits suicide. Orestes also goes mad, and Andromache, now queen, protects her chastity and her surviving child.

The play follows a consistent theme, the events take place on one day, and adheres to the three laws of unity, i.e., plot, time, and place. In beautiful verse written in less than 3,000 everyday words, it portrays the fate of man through the various aspects of romantic passion. It is a masterpiece that perfects the classical tragedy established in Corneille's "Le Cid" as a psychological drama.
