… After the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty (1522-66), traffic between the mainland and Taiwan developed, but historical records state that prior to this, Zheng He's expeditionary force from the South Seas called Tainan, and Lin Daoqian and others, who had connections with the Japanese pirates, pioneered Taiwan. Around the same time, the Portuguese, who had been advancing eastward, viewed Taiwan from the sea and called it Ilha Formosa (Beautiful Island). This is why Taiwan is referred to as Formosa in European documents. …
