…It is the backbone of the Scandinavian Peninsula, occupying the western half of the peninsula and running along the border with Norway and Sweden in the northern half. It was formed by the Caledonian orogeny about 400 million years ago, but the current height of the mountain range is due to fault movements since the Mesozoic era. In the Quaternary Period, it was covered by ice sheets, and erosion carved deep fjords and U-shaped valleys into the uplifted plateau. The rock peaks carved by the ice are steep. Sognefjord is 200 km long, with cliffs on both sides over 1000 m, and a depth of 1300 m. …
