A popular uprising at the end of the Yi Dynasty in Korea. It began in February 1862 (the Chinese zodiac sign was Water Dog) in Jinju, Gyeongsang Province, and continued through November of the same year in various parts of southern Korea (Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong provinces), mainly involving peasants. It is also called the Jinju People's Uprising. It is considered important as a popular uprising that occurred at the beginning of modern Korea, as it roughly overlaps with the period and area in which Donghak was active in its early stages, and the Daewon-gun government was established the following year. The direct cause of the uprising was the arbitrary and unjust exploitation (heavy taxes) of local governors and officials, and there were also cases where emerging local powers (such as wealthy people) led the rebellions, but many of the popular uprisings (a term used by the government at the time, but which has become a historical term in Korea) were aimed not only at local officials, but also at influential local people (such as landlords and wealthy people), including emerging powers.
