The development of art music began in Transylvania, a region that was rapidly westernized. From the 16th to the 17th century, the works of Hieronimus Ostermayer (1500-61) and Gabriel Reilich (1630?-77), who were active in this region, were influenced by Renaissance and early Baroque styles. In the 19th century, against the backdrop of Romania's independence and national unification movements, there was a growing momentum for the creation of national music, and Anton Pann (1796-1854), Alexandru Flechtenmacher (1823-98), Gavriil Musicescu (1847-1903), and others contributed to the creation of modern Romanian music with works based on folk music.
