Shinkai Kofun - Shinkai Kofun

Japanese: 新開古墳 - しんがいこふん

This circular tomb was located in Anyoji Shinkai, Ritto-cho, Kurita-gun, Shiga Prefecture. It was excavated and surveyed by the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education in 1959 in conjunction with the construction of the Meishin Expressway. It occupies the northern foot of Mt. Anyoji, overlooking the alluvial plain of the Yasu River to the northwest, and consists of Tomb No. 1, which is 34 meters in diameter, and the smaller Tomb No. 2, adjacent to it to the north. Both tombs lack roofing stones, but Tomb No. 1 has clay figures. In Tomb No. 1, two burial facilities were placed side by side, north and south. Both were a type of direct wooden coffin burial, with the head of the deceased placed to the east.

滋賀県栗太郡栗東町安養寺字新開に所在した円墳。名神高速道路の建設に伴い，1959年に滋賀県教育委員会が発掘･調査した。野洲（やす）川の沖積地を北西にのぞむ安養寺山の北麓を占め，直径34mの1号墳と，北に隣接する小型の2号墳とからなる。両墳とも葺石（ふきいし）を欠くが，1号墳には埴輪の樹立をみる。1号墳では，2基の埋葬施設が南北に並置されていた。いずれも一種の木棺直葬（じきそう）で，死者の頭位を東におく。
