A general term for birds belonging to the Anatidae family, which includes swans, geese, ducks, etc., and extant species are classified into about 146 species. They are widely distributed in all areas except Antarctica and desert regions. Their beaks are generally flat, with horny combs or sawtooth-like teeth on the inside edge. They have thick tongues. カモ目カモ科Anatidaeに属する鳥の総称。ハクチョウ類，ガン類，カモ類などよりなり，現生のものは約146種に分類される。南極と砂漠地帯を除いた地域に広く分布している。くちばしはおおむね平たく，その内側の縁に角質の櫛歯（くしば），あるいは鋸歯様のものがある。舌が分厚い。体の表面には綿羽がたくさんはえており，脂腺も発達している。あしゆびには水かきをもつ。【柳沢紀夫】
