…He was born in the small village of Fuendetodos near Zaragoza as the second son of a gilder, and was educated by late Baroque painters in Zaragoza from the age of 14. He studied in Italy on his own (1769-71) and became active as a fresco painter in Zaragoza. In 1773, he married the sister of Francisco Bayeu (1734-95), a court painter from his hometown. He then moved to Madrid and, with the help of his brother-in-law, worked on creating originals (cartons) for tapestries for the royal household. Despite the tragedy of losing his hearing in the middle of his life (1793), he continued to advance rapidly, from being a member of the Academy to becoming a court painter and then the first court painter to Charles IV, but in his final years he fled to France and died in Bordeaux. …
