European Community . An organization made up of the EEC (European Economic Community), ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community), and Euratom (European Atomic Energy Community). Founded in 1967 by six countries: France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Britain, Ireland, and Denmark joined in 1973, Greece in 1981, and Spain and Portugal in 1986. After economic integration, the country also aimed for political integration, and in November 1993, with the coming into force of the Maastricht Treaty (Treaty on European Union), it developed into the EU (European Union). →E-U (EU)
