German philosopher and Catholic thinker. Born in Münster. Studied philosophy, sociology and law at the University of Münster. Initially, he aimed to be a writer and essayist, but after World War II, he became professor of philosophical anthropology at the University of Münster. His famous essay on leisure, Christian themes such as faith, hope, love and sin, excellent introductory books on Plato, Thomas Aquinas and scholastic philosophy, and essays on Goethe, demonstrate his consistent attitude of always striving to enrich and inherit the spiritual traditions of Europe.

ドイツの哲学者，カトリック思想家。ミュンスター出身。ミュンスター大学で哲学，社会学，法学を学び，最初は文筆家，エッセイストたろうとしたが，第2次大戦後，ミュンスター大学で哲学的人間学担当の教授となる。閑暇についての有名なエッセーをはじめ，信仰，希望，愛，罪などのキリスト教的テーマ，プラトン，トマス･アクイナス，スコラ哲学に関する優れた入門書，ゲーテに関するエッセーなどで，つねにヨーロッパの精神的伝統を豊かに継承しようとする態度を貫いている。
