Tumor of the renal pelvis and ureter

The renal pelvis is broadly considered to be part of the kidney, but embryologically it is distinct from the renal parenchyma and has the same origin as the ureter. Therefore, tumors that develop here are also different in nature from tumors of the renal parenchyma, such as renal cancer, and are generally treated separately as renal pelvis/ureter tumors. Like the bladder, the renal pelvis and ureter are covered with epithelial cells that are unique to the urinary system, called transitional epithelium. Tumors of the renal pelvis and ureter mainly develop from these epithelial cells, and the majority of them are benign papillomas and malignant cancers.

腎盂は広義には腎臓の一部であるが，発生学的には腎臓の実質とは異なり尿管と同一の由来である。したがって，ここに発生する腫瘍も腎癌など腎実質の腫瘍とは性質を異にするため，腎盂･尿管腫瘍として別にとりあつかうのが普通である。腎盂と尿管は膀胱と同じく，移行上皮と呼ばれる尿路系に特有な上皮細胞で覆われている。主としてこの上皮細胞から発生する腫瘍が腎盂･尿管腫瘍で，良性の乳頭腫と悪性の癌がその大部分を占めている。
