Ginyugoi - Ginyugoi (English spelling) Barred flagtail

Japanese: ギンユゴイ - ぎんゆごい(英語表記)barred flagtail
Ginyugoi - Ginyugoi (English spelling) Barred flagtail

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Polycarpidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, from Ibaraki Prefecture to the southern coast of Kyushu in the Pacific Ocean, from Tsushima to the western coast of Kyushu, Yakushima, the Ryukyu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. The body is oblong and well laterally compressed. The body height is highest near the origin of the dorsal fin and low on the caudal peduncle. The caudal peduncle height is about one-third of the body height or slightly higher. The front end of the head is pointed. There are two spines on the gill cover, and the lower edge of the preopercle is serrated. The rear end of the upper jaw reaches below the front edge of the eye. Both the upper and lower jaws have a band of villiform teeth. It has teeth on the vomer (the bone at the front end of the skull base) and palate. The body is covered with pectinate scales, and there are no scales on the snout, interorbital region, or upper jaw. There are 48-56 pierced scales on the lateral line. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 9-11 soft rays, with a notch between the spines and the soft rays. The anal fin has 3 spines and 10-12 soft rays. The rear edge of the caudal fin is deeply indented. The body is blue on the back and silvery white on the ventral side. The caudal fin is black with four white vertical stripes. The dorsal fin is transparent with a dark edge. It lives in coastal rocky and coral reef areas, living in schools during the day and feeding on zooplankton and small fish at night. Juvenile fish measuring 3-4 cm in length are often seen in tide pools off the coast of Japan. They spend their entire lives in the sea and reach a total length of 30 cm. They are kept as ornamental fish because of their beautiful appearance. Four species of fish in the family Euonymus are known from Japan, but the silver Euonymus can be easily distinguished from the other species by the white vertical stripe on its tail fin.
