Master - Shinuchi

The person in charge of a Rakugo or Kodan performance. The term Shinuchi includes those who hold this qualification. This term has been used since the Tenpo era (1830-44), and refers to a performer who is promoted to Shinuchi after being promoted from Maeza and Nittsume, and is called "master." Until the Taisho era, the term Mitsume was also used. It takes 10 to 20 years to go from Maeza to Shinuchi. The most senior Shinuchi performers are also called "Oshinuchi," "Okanban," or "Ichibankan."

落語、講談などの興行の主任のこと。その資格をもつ位(くらい)をも含めて真打という。天保(てんぽう)年間（1830～44）から使われており、前座、二つ目を経て真打に昇進し、「師匠」とよばれるようになる。大正時代まで三つ目という呼称もあった。前座から真打になるまで10年から20年の歳月を要する。真打のなかでも大幹部のことを「大真打(おおしんうち)」「大看板(おおかんばん)」「一枚看板」などともいう。
