A sake brewing tax was imposed on the sake brewing industry during the Edo period. In the Middle Ages, there were sakaya-yaku and koji-yaku taxes, and even in the Edo period, various feudal domains imposed taxes from the early days under the names of sake transport tax and sake tax silver. In 1697 (Genroku 10), the shogunate issued a decree to impose a sake transport tax of one-third of the selling price across the country. The purpose of the tax was said to be to limit drinking by raising the price of sake. However, in reality, sake prices soared and demand did not decrease, so it was abolished in 1709 (Hoei 6). However, even after that, each domain continued to impose the sake transport tax as a major source of revenue. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
