Iga Highway

Japanese: 伊賀街道 - いがかいどう

A side road from Nara to Tsu in Ise Province, passing through Kasagi in Yamashiro Province, Shimagahara and Kozuke in Iga Province, or to Sekijuku on the Tokaido (present-day Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture). It was also called the Yamato Road, Igagoe Nara Road, or Igagoe Dochu, and was used for pilgrimages to Ise Shrine from Kinai and the Saigoku region. The Tsu clan placed importance on the road over Nagano Pass (the border between Misato Village (present-day Tsu City) and Oyamada Village (present-day Iga City) in the same prefecture) as the shortest route between Tsu and Kozuke. Araki Mataemon's revenge at Igagoe is famous.

奈良から山城国の笠置(かさぎ)，伊賀国の島ヶ原・上野などを経て伊勢国の津方面，ないしは東海道関宿（現三重県亀山市）に至る近世の脇街道。大和道・伊賀越奈良道・伊賀越道中ともよばれ，畿内・西国地方からの伊勢参宮などに利用された。津藩では津と上野を結ぶ道のうち，長野峠（同県美里村（現・津市）と大山田村（現・伊賀市）の境）越えの道を最短路として重視した。荒木又右衛門の伊賀越の敵討ちは有名。
