1767‐1824 French Neoclassical painter. Born in Montargis. Moved to Paris to live with the doctor Triozone, and was later adopted. In 1785 he entered David's studio, and in 1789 won the Prix de Rome and studied in Rome, where he studied the sfumato (blurring technique) of Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio. After returning to Japan, he moved away from David's historical paintings in terms of subject matter, and produced many works with romantic themes (such as The Sleep of Endymion, Ossian, and The Burial of Atala).
