French Neoclassical painter. Born in Montargis. Moved to Paris to live with the doctor Triozone, and was later adopted. In 1785 he entered David's studio, and in 1789 won the Prix de Rome and studied in Rome, where he studied the sfumato (blurring technique) of Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio. After returning to Japan, he moved away from David's historical paintings in terms of subject matter, and produced many works with romantic themes (such as The Sleep of Endymion, Ossian, and The Burial of Atala).

フランス新古典主義の画家。モンタルジMontargis生れ。パリに出て医師トリオゾンのもとに同居し，のち養子となる。1785年ダビッドのアトリエに入り，89年にローマ賞を獲得してローマに留学，レオナルド･ダ･ビンチやコレッジョのスフマート(ぼかし技法)を研究する。帰国後は主題の上ではダビッドの歴史画を離れ，ロマン主義的主題の作品(《エンデュミオンの眠り》《オシアン》《アタラの埋葬》など)を多く手がける。
