Amadís de Gaula - Amadís de Gaula

...And the giant who adorns the tail of the Golden Age is Calderón de la Barca, whose philosophical ``Vie à vie'' (``Life is a Dream'') and ``The Mayor of Salamea,'' which depict the honor of the common people, using the elaborate style and stage composition typical of the Baroque period, are among the pinnacles of Spanish theater.
[novel]
In the first half of the 16th century, chivalric romances, which idealized medieval chivalry and reached their peak with Amadis de Gaula, flourished, but the picaresque, which satirized social ills through the journeys of a villain, emerged as a reaction to this idealistic tendency. The anonymous Life of Lazarillo de Tormes, published in 1554, marked the beginning of this genre, which went on to Mateo Aleman's Life of Guzmán de Alfarace, the Villain, and reached its zenith with The Life of Don Pablos, the Storyteller, by Francisco de Quevedo, the greatest writer of the Spanish Baroque period.
