The process of applying paint to an object to form a coating. Generally, prior to painting, rust, dirt, oil, etc. are removed from the surface to be painted, and the surface is smoothed with sandpaper or other tools, and filled with a filler. 塗料を物体に塗布して塗膜を形成させること。一般に塗装に先だち塗布面のさび，よごれ，油などを除き，サンドペーパーなどで表面を平滑にしたり，充填(じゅうてん)剤を用いて目止めを行う。塗料の性質，物体の形状，乾燥法などにより各種の塗装法がある。家具，家庭用品，工芸品などでは主として刷毛(はけ)塗りが行われ，建築・工業用にはスプレーガンによる吹付塗装が多く，エーロゾル型の家庭用吹付塗料も利用されている。ほかに静電塗装，電着塗装など。
