…During the oil crisis in the autumn, the Netherlands, along with the United States, was subject to an oil embargo by Arab oil-producing countries, but fortunately the domestic production and consumption of natural gas increased dramatically, allowing the Netherlands to overcome the crisis. The Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party, and the Christian Historical Union, three sectarian parties, concerned by the gradually weakening influence of churches and religions in a multi-party and affluent welfare society, formed a unified parliamentary group in 1973 as the Christian Democratic Union (CDA). In the 1977 election, the Labor Party became the largest party, but did not win a majority, and a CDA-VVD coalition government was formed, headed by Andreas AMvan Agt (1931- ), the second-largest CDA party. …
