A bird of the Charadriiformes and Charadriidae families (illustration). One of the most common plovers seen on the coasts of Japan. Total length is about 17 cm. It is found in the subarctic south of Eurasia, Africa, Australia, North and South America, etc. In Japan, it breeds from Kyushu northward, and most are resident birds. The upper side of the body is gray-brown and the underside is white. Males have black eye stripes and spots on their chest, while females are brown and have white bands on their wings, which are noticeable when flying. The beak and legs are black. It lives on the coast, in sandy areas of reclaimed land, and on the banks of large rivers in the middle reaches or lower, as well as on sandy sandbanks on sandbars. チドリ目チドリ科の鳥(イラスト)。日本の海岸でごくふつうに見られるチドリ類の一つ。全長約17cm。ユーラシア大陸の亜寒帯以南,アフリカ,オーストラリア,南北アメリカなどに分布する。日本では九州以北で繁殖し,多くは留鳥である。体の上面は灰褐色で,下面は白い。雄は過眼線と胸側の斑が黒く,雌は褐色,翼には白帯があり,飛ぶとき目だつ。くちばしと脚は黒い。海岸や干拓地の砂地,大きな川の中流以下の岸や中州の砂原などにすむ。
