Adachi Choshun

A Western obstetrician in the late Edo period. His given name was Seshige, his pen name was Matsubun, and his pen name was Mugai. He was the son of Inoue Masahiro, a retainer of the Asano clan, the feudal lord of Hiroshima (Aki Province). He was born in Edo. His second daughter Sekoshi married Udagawa Yoan, and his third daughter Etsu married Udagawa's younger brother Eiken. He studied under Adachi Baian, a physician in the Satsuma domain, and was adopted by him. He later studied under Taki Genkan and became the personal physician to the feudal lord of Sasayama in Tanba Province. He also studied Dutch studies under Yoshida Chosuku, and worked on translating Western medical books, publishing Iho Kenki (1831). Seeing Chosuku's fame in Dutch internal medicine, he aspired to become a Western obstetrician, and translated Baudelock's book on midwifery and published Sanka Soushi. He is known as the father of Western obstetrics. He often corresponded with his student Komuro Motosada, and Ikoda Jundo, a disciple of Komuro's, was his great-grandson.

江戸後期の西洋産科医。名は世茂,字は松文,号は無涯。広島(芸州)藩主浅野家の臣の井上正広の子。江戸生まれ。次女世輿は宇田川榕庵に嫁し,3女悦はその弟栄建を婿とする。薩摩藩医足立梅庵に学び,その養子となる。のち多紀元簡に師事し,丹波国篠山藩主の侍医になった。また蘭学を吉田長淑に学んで,西洋医学書の翻訳に従事し,『医方研幾』(1831)を出版。長淑が蘭方内科で名を成したのをみて,西洋産科医を志し,ボードロックの助産婦書を訳して『産科礎』を出版した。西洋産科の祖と称される。弟子の小室元貞としばしば文通し,その門人伊古田純道は孫弟子に当たる。
