...Steel arch supports have the advantage of being strong and able to withstand strong earth pressure, and because they are open, large machinery can be used. In the days of wooden support columns, they were often destroyed by earth pressure or collapsed due to uneven pressure, resulting in tragic tunnel collapses. However, since the introduction of steel arch supports, these types of disasters have decreased dramatically. The NATM (short for new Austrian tunnelling method) method was developed in Austria in the early 1960s.
