A descendant of the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. One of the Seika families. Its founder was Tsunezane, the third son of the regent Fujiwara no Michizane at the end of the Heian period, and the family name Oinimikado was named after the residence of his son Fujiwara no Tsunemune, the Oinimikado Tomikoji Nishitei. Tsunezane died as Dainagon (chief councilor), but his daughter Yoshiko entered the harem of Emperor Goshirakawa and became the birth mother of Emperor Nijō. Tsunezane wielded influence as the maternal grandfather of the emperor, and was awarded the title of Grand Minister of State after his death. Her son Tsunemune also rose to power as Emperor Nijō's father-in-law, and incurred the wrath of the retired Emperor Goshirakawa, who exiled him to Awa, but he was later recalled and served as Minister for 26 years, with the highest rank of Left Minister.
