Giraud, Yvette
Born: September 14, 1916, Paris
[Died] August 3, 2014. A French chanson singer from Strasbourg. She worked as a typist for a record company, but began singing at a cabaret in Montparnasse in 1944. She made her debut as a singer in 1945, and in 1946 her song "Hydrangea Girl" became a hit. In 1952 she won the ACC Disk Award for "Poet's Soul" and married pianist Marc Helan. Since visiting Japan in 1955, she has loved the country and visited almost every year until the 1990s. She was the first foreign singer to sing in Japanese, and her low voice, which mixed in Japanese, made her equally popular with Yves Montand, sparking a chanson boom. She gave concerts all over Japan and continued to visit nursing homes. She was known for hits such as "Rose wa Akogare" and "Machikado", and in her later years she loved to sing "Sayonara Adieu Japon". In 1994 she was awarded the Order of the Precious Crown, Fourth Class.
