Sentimentalism - Sentimentalism

Japanese: センチメンタリズム - せんちめんたりずむ(英語表記)sentimentalism
Sentimentalism - Sentimentalism

Generally translated as "sentimentalism," it is used to describe sentimental tendencies such as "tear-jerking" and "pulling tears from children," but originally it meant "sensitive" or "elegant." The "sentimental comedies" popular in England in the late 17th century were plays that appealed to moral emotions and drew tears from the audience. In the early 18th century, intellectualism and classicism became popular as a reaction to this, but in the middle of the century, a trend to value human sensibility reappeared. The central figure in this movement was Laurence Sterne, who elevated the meaning of sentiment to "refined sensibility" in his travelogue "A Sentimental Journey." This work had a great impact on the continent, adding the new words empfindsam to German and sentimental to French, and eventually leading to Flaubert writing "Sentimental Education."
