Foreman - Shokucho

Among the various types of managers that make up a business organization, this position is the one that directly commands and supervises various workers at the production site. It corresponds to the American foreman, but the actual job content and authority are much more limited. The job content is wide-ranging because it is a site manager. The main contents are (1) employee management, which includes supervision of work execution, maintenance of discipline based on the work rules, smooth human relations, and personnel evaluation, (2) quality control, which includes promotion of club activities to improve quality, (3) cost management, which includes guidance on cost reduction, (4) process management, which includes dissemination of production plans and adjustment of progress, (5) equipment maintenance management, and (6) improvement of work methods. In the early days of industrialization, the authority regarding employment and wages was also given, but with modernization, this was transferred to the human resources department and labor department.

経営組織を構成する各種の管理者のうち、生産現場にあって各種作業者を直接に指揮・監督する職位。アメリカのフォアマンforemanにあたるが、実質的な職務内容、職務権限は、それよりもかなり限定されている。その職務内容は、現場管理者であるために多岐にわたっている。おもな内容としては、(1)業務遂行の監督、就業規則に基づく規律保持、人間関係の円滑化、人事考課などを内容とする従業員管理、(2)品質向上のためのサークル活動の推進などを内容とする品質管理、(3)原価節減の指導などを内容とする原価管理、(4)生産計画の周知化、進度調整などを内容とする工程管理、(5)設備の保全管理、(6)作業方法の改善などである。工業化の初期には、雇用や賃金に関する権限も与えられていたが、それらは近代化とともに人事部や労務部に移された。
