Japanese: セミ(蟬) - セミ（英語表記）cicada

A general term for insects belonging to the superfamily Cicadoidea in the order Hemiptera. There are over 1,600 species worldwide, with 32 in Japan. The body is large to medium-sized, with a broad head and three simple eyes at the top of the head between the compound eyes. The wings are hard and often have transparent wing chambers. The forewings are much longer than the hindwings, and usually there are eight apical chambers on the forewing and six on the hindwing. The proboscis is long, extending at least posterior to the middle leg base. The femora of the forelegs are thick and have a row of teeth on the underside. Males have a particularly developed sound-producing organ on their abdomen.
