Sunfish (manbogai) - Bull Mouth Helmet Shell

A gastropod shell of the family Acanthidae (illustration). The shell is thick, solid, and obovate, reaching a height of about 15 cm and a diameter of about 10 cm. The coils are low, with the last coil being large. The surface is purple-gray with black-brown spots, and there are 3 to 4 thick, low, tuberculated ribs, with thin ribs between the thick ribs. In adult shells, the outer edge of the shell opening thickens and curves inward, narrowing the opening into a long, thin shape. The edge has many wrinkles, forming a comb-like shape. A sliding layer with an orange color band covers a wide area on the axis side of the last layer, and the edge has many wrinkles, with black between the wrinkles.

トウカムリガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻は厚質堅固で倒卵形，高さ15cm，径10cmくらいになる。巻きは低くて，最後の巻きは大きい。表面は紫灰色で黒褐斑があり，結節のある3～4本の太く低い肋があり，太い肋の間には細い肋がある。殻口は成貝では外側の縁が厚くなって内方へ曲がり，殻口を細長く狭める。そしてその縁に多くのしわがあって櫛歯（くしば）状になる。また軸側は橙色の色帯のある滑層が広く最後の層上をおおい，その縁には多くのしわがあり，しわの間は黒い。
