Zilu - White

A scholar from the Spring and Autumn period in China. A disciple of Confucius. His surname was Zhong and his given name was You. Zilu was his pen name, and was also called Ji Lu. He was from Bian, Lu (Shandong Province). He was listed as one of the Four Departments and Ten Philosophers of Government. A brave warrior with outstanding valor. He was a bold and honest man. He always protected Confucius with his martial talent. He was frank in expressing his opinions to his teacher, and although Confucius often scolded Zilu for his reckless bravery and rudeness, he was the disciple with whom he had the closest bond. He became the governor of the Ji clan, and later became a senior official in the village of Pu in Wei, but was killed in battle during the civil war in Kaikai, Wei. His body was pickled in salt, much to Confucius' grief.

中国、春秋時代の士人。孔子の弟子。姓は仲(ちゅう)、名は由(ゆ)。子路は字(あざな)、また季路(きろ)とも。魯(ろ)の卞(べん)（山東省）の人。四科十哲の政事にあげられる。武勇に優れた勇士。豪毅(ごうき)かつ実直な人柄。その武才をもってつねに孔子を守護した。師に対しても率直に意見を述べ、孔子も子路の蛮勇や粗野をたしなめることが多いが、もっとも心の通い合った弟子といえよう。季氏の宰となり、のち衛(えい)の村、蒲(ほ)の大夫となったが、衛の蕢聵(かいかい)の内乱で戦死。その死体は塩漬けにされ、孔子を悲しませた。
