A rural area in a small mountain basin in the northeast of Nara City and the north of the Yamato Plateau. Rice paddy cultivation and tea cultivation are carried out here. The area is divided into the former Yagyu Village and Oyagyū Village. The former Yagyu Village was the site of the Yagyu clan's 10,000 koku jin'ya (camp) during the Edo period, when they served as swordsmanship instructors to the shogunate. The area includes the remains of the jin'ya, Hōtoku-ji Temple, the family temple of the Yagyu clan, the grave of the lord of the Yagyu domain, the Yagyu Magai Monument (Hoso Jizo), the residence of a former Yagyu domain chief retainer, and the Yagyu Iris Garden. The former Oyagyū Village is also home to Yagyu Yamaguchi Shrine, a shrine listed in the Shikinaisha (a prefectural designated intangible cultural property) known for its taiko drum dance, and Enjō-ji Temple on Mount Ninjū. The Yagyu Kaido road that connects Nara City and Yagyu is part of the Tokai Nature Trail. National Route 369 also passes through the area.
