Like a lion dance, a pair of dancers wear a tiger-skin patterned body curtain, one manipulating the body and the other manipulating the tiger's head, and perform the dance accompanied by flutes, drums, and sasara. It is particularly common along the Sanriku coast from Aomori to Miyagi prefectures, but can also be seen in Yokosuka, Kanagawa prefecture; Minamiizu, Shizuoka prefecture; Hokuto, Yamanashi prefecture; Higashikagawa, Kagawa prefecture; Matsuyama, Ehime prefecture; Mifune, Kumamoto prefecture; and Ichikikushikino, Kagoshima prefecture. Many dances along the Sanriku coast are said to have the power to prevent fires, and some performances involve climbing onto roofs and dancing. In Kanagawa, Shizuoka, and Kagawa prefectures, including the Sanriku coast, you can see performances based on the theme of the tiger slaying from the Joruri play "Kokusenya Kassen."
