Frederic Leighton

British painter and sculptor. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, he spent his adult years in various parts of Europe. He received his art education in Florence, Frankfurt, and other cities. He settled in London in 1860. He painted medieval and biblical subjects in his early years, but later became interested in Greek art and rode the wave of the times to become a successful neoclassical artist. His style expresses intellectual ideal beauty and often has an aesthetic tendency. He served as president of the Royal Academy from 1878 onwards. It is largely due to him that the late Victorian academy flourished as a glamorous social gathering place.

イギリスの画家，彫刻家。ヨークシャーのスカーバラに生まれ，ヨーロッパの各地に過ごして成人。フィレンツェ，フランクフルトなどで美術教育を受ける。1860年ロンドンに定住。初期には中世や聖書の主題を描くが，のちにギリシア美術に傾倒し，時代の波に乗った新古典主義作家として成功した。作風は知性的な理想美の表出とともに，しばしば唯美的傾向をもつ。78年以降，ローヤル･アカデミーの会長を務める。後期ビクトリア朝のアカデミーが華やかな社交の場として隆盛をみたのは，彼に負うところが大きい。
