1830‐96 British painter and sculptor. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, he spent his adult years in various parts of Europe. He received his art education in Florence, Frankfurt, and other cities. He settled in London in 1860. He painted medieval and biblical subjects in his early years, but later became interested in Greek art and rode the wave of the times to become a successful neoclassical artist. His style expresses intellectual ideal beauty and often has an aesthetic tendency. He served as president of the Royal Academy from 1878 onwards. It is largely due to him that the late Victorian academy flourished as a glamorous social gathering place. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
