Its official name is Sirius B. Its luminosity is 8.54 magnitude. It is a white dwarf of spectral type wA5. In 1834, before its direct discovery, it was predicted to be a binary star based on the meandering proper motion of the primary star A, and was discovered by American A. Clark in 1862. Subsequent observations confirmed that the star's radius is 0.016 times that of the Sun, its mass is 1.02 times that of the Sun, and its density is therefore 400,000 times that of water, making it the first white dwarf ever discovered.
