In Greek mythology, goatskin shields appear as possessions of Zeus and Athena. Zeus' shield is covered with the skin of Amalthea, a female goat who served as his nurse in Crete, symbolizing his role as the weather god who gathers the clouds. Athena's shield has the head of Gorgo Medusa, a gift from Perseus, attached to its center, making it a terrifying weapon that turns anyone who sees it to stone.
