François Girardon

François Girardon

French sculptor. Born in Troyes. At a young age, he studied in Rome under the patronage of Cardinal Séguier, and after returning to Japan, he was recognized and worked under Le Brun on various decorations for the Palace of Versailles. His representative works, which decorate the gardens of Versailles, include group sculptures such as "Apollo Adored by a Nymph" (1666-75) and "The Rape of Proserpina" (1694-99). Girardon, who was the most faithful practitioner of Versailles classicism during the era of Louis XIV, Colbert, and Le Brun, imitated Hellenistic sculptures, and his Apollo was a copy of "Apollo of the Belvedere." He also produced many portraits and funerary monuments. One of his representative works is the tomb of Cardinal Richelieu in the Sorbonne University Chapel. He died in Paris.
