…(4) Classification by use There are special rifles, such as (a) cavalry rifles (carbines) that have short barrels and are easy to use on horseback, and (b) sniper rifles that have improved accuracy at long distances. In the past, smoothbore military long-barreled guns were called muskets, and rifled guns were called rifles, but now that all rifled guns are rifled, rifles are often called rifles or rifle guns.

Rifles were used by the Mongol army in its European campaigns in the 13th century, and it is said that they were first used in Europe by the Belgians.

…(4)用途による分類　小銃には特殊なものとして，(a)銃身が短く馬上で使いやすくした騎兵銃(カービン銃)，(b)遠距離の射撃精度を向上させた狙撃銃などがある。なお，かつては滑腔式の軍用長身銃をマスケット銃musketと呼び，これに対し腔線(ライフル)を施した銃をライフルと呼んで区別していたが，すべてが施条銃となった今日，小銃をライフルもしくはライフル銃と呼ぶことが多い。
