...The circumstances surrounding the translation of the Law section are handed down in the Epistle of Aristeas. There are two theories about why it is called the Septuagint (abbreviated LXX, meaning 70 in Latin): one is that it is because the first translation of the Law was done by 72 translators, and the other is that the number 70 means that it is an authoritative translation, as it is an authoritative number in the Old Testament. Currently, it remains in an almost complete form in a Greek booklet in capital letters from the 4th or 5th century, and these have been compared with papyrus from the 2nd century and a critical edition has been published.
