John Hampden

John Hampden

British politician. Born in Buckinghamshire. Educated at Oxford University and Temple Law School. Elected to the House of Commons for the first time in 1621, he emerged as a leading anti-Royalist leader under Charles I. In 1635, he refused to collect ship tax, and although the trial over this attracted national attention, it ended in victory for the King. When the Long Parliament was convened in 1640, Hampden became one of the leaders of the Parliamentary party along with J. Pym, and when the civil war began, he quickly organized an army to secure Buckinghamshire for the Parliamentarians. However, he was mortally wounded in the Battle of Oxfordshire in 1643, and died a long-lost life. (Book version 1988)
