Shirabe (search) - Shirabe

Japanese: シラベ(調べ) - しらべ
Shirabe (search) - Shirabe
(1) A short piece of music played by the musicians in the "Kagami no Ma" (Mirror Room) just before the start of a Noh performance. Originally it was meant to tune the instruments, but later a set format was developed and it is played according to that. It is played in the order of Noh flute, small drum, large drum, and taiko drum (sometimes without the taiko drum). In "mai-bayashi" and "ichicho", it is played in the dressing room. Also, the "shirabeo" (hemp string) that ties the two pieces of leather of the small drum, large drum, and taiko drum together is sometimes simply called "shirabe". (2) A term in geza music, it is a piece of music used in the opening and entrance/exit of scenes at daimyo residences and large halls in period kyogen.
