…In 1700, he plotted a rebellion with the help of Louis XIV of France, but was discovered. He was arrested in 1701, but escaped and went into exile in Poland. There he met with leaders of the peasant uprising, including Esze Tamás and Kis Albert, and in the spring of 1703 he declared the Hungarian War of Independence and called for the participation of Hungarian nobles and peasants. In June of the same year, Rákóczi returned to his country, and his army, made up of peasants and landless nobles, defeated the Austrian imperial army one after another. …
