A general term for insects in the beetle order Mordellidae family. Many species gather on flowers during the day and feed on nectar. They have well-developed hind legs and can hop like a flea, as well as fly quickly, hence the name. The English name is the same. Their bodies are narrow, as if pressed with fingers on both sides. The head points downward, the neck is narrow and tapered, and the tail tip stretches backwards. About 1,000 species have been recorded worldwide, and about 150 species in Japan. The larvae mainly bore into dead trees and grass stems, but some are known to form galls and feed on mushrooms on dead trees. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
