… There are two types of axes: the axe in the narrow sense (Chinese: 线, English: axe), in which the blade and handle of the axe head are nearly parallel, like an axe, and the hand axe (Chinese: 錛, English: adze), in which the blade and handle are nearly perpendicular, like a hoe. Here, we will call them vertical axes and horizontal axes, and use them as general terms for axes, or for things that are unclear which is which.
