Architectural brackets

Architectural brackets
It consists of a masu (a bracket) and a hijiki (a bracket) on a pillar in Chinese architecture, and refers to the part that supports the weight of the eaves. It is also called a tokiyo or masu-gumi. There are various names depending on how the masu and hijiki are combined. A bracket that simply places a bracket on a pillar is called a fune-hijiki, a bracket that places a bracket on one masu is called a daito-hijiki, and a bracket with three masu on top of that is called a mitsudo-gumi. A bracket that extends forward at a right angle from the wall is called a tesaki-gumimono, a mitsudo-gumi with a bracket extending forward and a masu on top is called a demitsudo, and a bracket with a set of masu and hijiki on top of the next masu is called a degumi-gumi.

中国系建築の柱上にある斗(ます)と肘木(ひじき)とからなり,軒の重荷をささえる部分をいう。斗栱(ときよう),斗組(ますぐみ)などともいう。斗と肘木との組合せ方によっていろいろの名称がある。柱上に肘木をおくだけのものを舟肘木,斗一つの上に肘木をおくものを大斗(だいと)肘木,その上に斗を三つおくものを三斗(みつど)組という。壁から直角に前方へ出たものを手先(てさき)の組物といい,三斗組で前方に肘木を出し,先に斗をのせたものを出三斗(でみつど),その先の斗の上に1組の斗と肘木をのせたものを出組(でぐみ)という。
