A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). In Japan, this goose is the second most commonly seen after the white-fronted goose. It breeds in northern Eurasia and Greenland, and migrates to central and southern Europe and eastern Asia in winter. It also comes to Japan as a winter bird, living in large lakes, marshes, and rice fields. It also descends on dry farmland during migration. It is named after the water chestnuts that grow in marshes. In Britain, it is called the bean goose because it arrives during the bean harvest season.
