Ezukushi - Ezukushi

Japanese: 絵尽し - えづくし

A booklet with a set theme and a collection of pictures. Examples include Hishikawa Moronobu's Kokin Ezukushi and Uchiwa Etsukushi. In Joruri and Kabuki, this refers to a type of picture book that also serves as a plot book. For example, in Kamigata Joruri, the main text of the play includes pictures of certain scenes, which were then extracted and sold as picture books. Later, they were planned from the beginning as picture books with a plot that could be followed, with a dozen or so pages of paper in a bag. The originals had large pictures, with one or two scenes per spread, but later they were drawn from a bird's-eye view in a stairwell-style float style, with the interior divided by sliding doors and walls, and a different scene depicted in each space.

主題を一応定め，絵ばかりを集めた冊子。菱川師宣（ひしかわもろのぶ）の《古今絵づくし》《団扇（うちわ）絵つくし》といった類である。浄瑠璃，歌舞伎では，筋書本をかねた一種の絵本番付をさしていう。上方の浄瑠璃を例にとれば，正本（しようほん）の中に当り場面が絵画化されて入り，それだけを抜き出して絵本としたものが売り出されたりしていた。のちには袋入り半紙版十数丁の，筋が追える絵本として初めから企画された。当初のものは絵が大きく，見開き図で1場面または2場面程度のものであったが，のちに吹抜屋台式に俯瞰（ふかん）的に描いて，屋内を襖や壁で仕切り，その各空間に違った場面を描く方式がとられた。
